(May 12th, 2010) On the occasion of World Celiac Disease Day on May 15th, the German Celiac Disease Society has been inviting visitors to events in various cities since May 8th, to find out more about symptoms, To inform diagnosis and possible solutions for celiac disease.

Celiac disease, which is also known as (native) sprue in adults, is a family-related indigestion that is associated with severe diarrhea and fatty stools. According to current knowledge, the background is a genetically designed gluten or gliadin intolerance, which leads to damage to the small intestinal villi and thus to the disturbed absorption of vital nutrients via the intestinal mucosa. Gluten / gliadin occurs as a protein in a number of cereals, including wheat, oats, spelled, rye and barley.

In the long run, the intolerance, in addition to intestinal complaints with flatulence, leads to symptoms of mineral, protein and vitamin deficiency, to cracked corners of the mouth, tongue infections and growth disorders in children. Often, the affected families have already had a long journey of suffering at the time of diagnosis. This year's events are therefore primarily intended to sensitize the population to "discovering" the disorder in themselves and others at an early stage.

Promotions are offered in different cities. After a gluten-free brunch last Sunday, the Scheidegg spa administration is holding its “Gluten-Free Scheidegger Active Week” with a supporting program for people with celiac disease until May 16. In Bonn, the DGZ invites you to a doctor-patient seminar at the Bonn Science Center on May 15 between 10:00 and 16:00, where lectures and information stands await those interested. In addition, regional discussion groups open the doors for newbies and the curious.
