When the first rays of sunshine lure in spring, many people are drawn outdoors. However, care should be taken to ensure adequate sun protection, emphasizes dermatologist Herbert Kirchesch in an interview with the news agency "dpa". Since the skin has to get used to the sun after winter, sunburn can easily occur.
Protect skin with a high sun protection factor from the sun Anyone who stays in the sun for a long time, for example on a bike tour or a long walk, should thoroughly apply sunscreen to free areas of the body, advises the North Rhine deputy chair in the professional association of German dermatologists. A high sun protection factor is important because the skin is very sensitive after winter. "You shouldn't be fooled by the rather cool, spring-like temperatures: the sun is quite intense," says the dermatologist. The forehead, ears, nose and hands are particularly at risk. UV radiation is particularly intense in the midday sun and can easily cause sunburn.
"There are people who notice after a quarter of an hour that something is going on," reports Kirchesch. People with skin that does not turn brown in the sun are particularly at risk. "Especially in the early sun with untrained skin, it will be more likely than others."
Home remedies for sunburn If the skin is red and painful after a stay in the sun, cooling in particular provides relief. A temperature of 15 degrees Celsius should not be fallen below, since excessive cold can slow down the healing process of the skin. "Home remedies such as moist envelopes usually help quite well," advises the dermatologist. "For me, a sunburn is something that pulls and tenses the next day and is more than just a little red." If the burn is stronger, the doctor usually prescribes a lotion containing cortisone.
Basically, the affected skin areas should be covered with clothing and protected from the sun until the sunburn has completely healed. In addition to cold compresses, naturopathy also uses healing earth to soothe the skin. In addition, a teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in one liter of water can be sprayed onto the affected skin and provide relief. Cucumber slices also have a cooling and calming effect on sunburnt skin. In contrast, ointments, fats and oils should not be used for sunburn, as they reduce the heat emitted by the skin and can even cause a deterioration in the condition. (ag)
